U.S. suffer first-ever WWC group loss on unlucky deflection

After winning their first two games by a combined scored of 5-0, click the No. 1-ranked U.S. lost their first-ever Women’s World Cup group stage match, 2-1, to Sweden on Wednesday. With their advancement to the quarterfinals already sealed and only their opponent to be decided, the U.S. fell behind early when defender Amy LePeilbet earned a yellow card for crashing into Sweden’s Lotta Schelin in the box. Lisa Dahlkvist converted the ensuing penalty kick to give Sweden a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute and end Hope Solo’s clean-sheet streak at 781 minutes.

The match got worse for LePeilbet when she deflected a Nilla Fischer free kick into the U.S. goal to give Sweden a 2-0 advantage before halftime. LePeilbet was mercifully subbed off in the 59th minute.

The U.S. did eventually finish one of their many chances when Abby Wambach broke her goal drought in the 67th minute, but the match would end with a 2-1 score and the Swedes doing what looked like some variation of the Hokey Pokey.

Because of the loss, the U.S. women’s quarterfinal opponent will be Brazil, which beat them 4-0 in the 2007 Women’s World Cup semis. Also, no team has ever won the WWC after losing a match in the group stage. But on a positive note, at least the weather in Germany has been nice since they’ve been there.

Somone turned out the lights on Canada v Nigeria

Somone turned out the lights on Canada v Nigeria

Group A of the Women’s World Cup was already decided with Canada and Nigeria failing to take any points off of Germany and France in the first two matchdays, discount cialis but to turn off the lights in the second half of Canada’s ultimately meaningless match against Nigeria on Tuesday was a bit harsh.

While most attention was on the Germany’s 4-2 win over France, The lights in Dresden’s Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion went out with Canada and Nigeria still scoreless in the 84th minute. The match was halted as they tried to get them back on, and when they finally did, Nigeria scored the winner a minute after play resumed. That capped off a very disappointing trip for Canada and probably made them wish the lights had just stayed off.

Mexico U-17s reach final with two great goals and a head wound

Tournament hosts Mexico reached the U-17 World Cup final in pretty much the most dramatic way possible without playing in a hurricane or while someone tried to assassinate the president in the stadium.

Trailing a very talented German team 2-1 late in the second half, viagra buy Mexico equalized with an improbable goal scored directly off a Jorge Espericueta corner kick in the 75th minute. Julio Gomez clashed heads with a German defender on the play as the ball whizzed by to go off the far post and in the goal untouched, leaving him bleeding and in need of patching up on the pitch.

Then, to take the already dramatic situation to a level that would even make Hollywood vomit over the sheer perfection of it all, Gomez returned to the pitch with a massive bandage around his head. And on another corner in the 89th minute, Gomez executed an excellent over(bandaged)head kick to score the winner and his second goal of the game…

The crowd went nuts, the commentator convulsed with delight and birds flying overhead sang opera before exploding like hand grenades.

Mexico will now play Uruguay in the final as they look to win their second U-17 World Cup in six years (the tournament is held every two years). The final is almost certain to be boring compared to this.

Best. Added. Time. Clock. Ever.

Q: Name another place outside of the soccer field where an extra four minutes can seem like an eternity and mean the difference between making someone scream in ecstasy or sending them home disappointed?

A: The bedroom.

This folks, is great marketing.

Fulham selling Michael Jackson products to go with their odd statue

Fulham selling Michael Jackson products to go with their odd statue

When Fulham owner Mohamed Al Fayed put a tacky statue of Michael Jackson outside of Craven Cottage and told anyone who didn’t like it that they can “go to hell, sovaldi sale ” the consensus seemed to be that it’s his club and his money so he can do what he wants. Though it was certainly strange, at the time, Al Fayed’s intentions behind the tribute to his friend seemed positive and (relatively) selfless. Now? Not so much.

And with that said, I present the “Michael at the Cottage tribute collection” now available in the official Fulham club shop. Let’s take a closer look at some of the ways Al Fayed is profiting from his old pal’s death…

First things first, here is the most expensive item in the collection. A Michael Jackson tribute umbrella. Actually, it appears to be an umbrella in tribute to the statute in tribute to Michael Jackson, but don’t spend too much time thinking about that. Michael liked umbrellas. He used them a lot. He would want you to have this one. It can be yours for £29.99.

How about a book written by another friend of Michael’s who is also now trying to profit form his death? And it even comes with the added bonus of “dark side” conspiracy theories. Ooo! It can be yours for £17.99. And if your dead pop star merchandise budget is a little tight, there is also a paperback version available for £14.99. So you have no excuse to not buy this.

Sure, no one really needs a lanyard and the only thing Michael Jacksony about this is that it has his name written on it a few times, but come on. It can be yours for £2.99. You should probably buy 10 of them.

This is just breathtaking. It’s an ugly shirt that features a man wearing an ugly shirt on it. There are multiple dimensions to the ugliness. I’m pretty sure this is how the space-time continuum gets ripped. It can be yours for £16.99.

Nagbe juggles, scores wonder goal from distance with ease

As the No. 2 pick in this year’s MLS SuperDraft, discount cialis expectations were always going to be high for Portland Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe. But I doubt many people expected him to score his first MLS goal like this.

With Portland down 2-0 after a pair of early goals from Sporting KC, Nagbe made Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen regret punching the ball directly to him (and the KC defenders regret forgetting he was on the pitch) by juggling the ball just outside the box a couple of times to casually set himself up for a shot that rose up over his teammate’s attempt to head it and into the far corner of the goal. Portland still lost the game 2-1, presumably because KC learned to not set up Nagbe like that again.

If for some bizarre reason we had to compare them, this wasn’t as impressive as Eric Hassli’s goal a few weeks ago. It was still quite nice and definitely not a bad way to get started, though.

Fanatic X Announced Today, Tournament on Saturday

cialis usa on Flickr”>Fanatic

Once again the most fashionable pickup tournament God has ever allowed the sun to shine upon, adidas’ Fanatic tournament, is set to descend on Manhattan’s West Side this weekend with all of the advance warning of an F5 tornado.

I honestly love this event. Seriously. It’s the city’s best amateur soccer event and a staple of my ever-lightening summer social calendar but the short notice routine is waaaaay tired. Maybe it’s to do with trying to keep the event exclusive or something equally unegalitarian but it’s almost like they don’t want people to know when it is.

Why am I so pissed? Because after months of asking around when the tournament is, it’s being held on the day I’m going on vacation. Figures. SF can’t win y’all.

Anyway, selfish diatribe aside here are this year’s teams:
Freeman?s Sporting Club, Nom de Hooligans, The Smile, The Standard FC, United Bamboo, Bowery United, MA3 Killers,
Supreme Team, Miss Lily?s, Diner Old Boys, VICE FC, Psyop, Chinatown Soccer Club, Monkeyvibes, ACE Hotel?s ?ACE + Co?, ?Opening Ceremony FC, Visionaire?s ?V-team?, Last Magazines ?Last United?, Complex Magazine?s ?Complex FC, and Supreme Records.
